Our Story

John memorizing God's Word with children in San Clemente, CA – 1986
John memorizing God's Word with children in San Clemente, CA – 1986
InsideOut Studios and Impress Kids are born out of a journey and a passion God started in a young man in 1985. John Tice came to faith in Jesus Christ and was impacted by pastors who loved God and committed His truth to memory. John found himself drawn to this and was convinced he needed to do the same for his own sake and for his new life in Christ. He quickly experienced the power of God's Word to transform him from the inside out.

At about the same time, John began serving children in a local church in San Clemente, California (a fantastic coastal town, by-the-way, just north of San Diego). There, John fell in love with children's ministry. Since then, he has served as a volunteer, Bible Club missionary, and children's pastor making Bible memory a cornerstone of his work.

A Drive and a Dream
"One summer night in 1997", John recalls, "I had just awarded a trophy to a twelve year-old boy who had successfully completed a six-year Bible memory program. While driving home from the boy's church, I began to dream about how to make children's Bible memory better. I dreamed of a plan that could work with any church program, school, or family. I envisioned ways to make memorizing Scripture fun, engaging and effective." Though the dream had gone dormant, at times, John say's, "God has not allowed me to let go of this dream."

From Dream to Reality
Three major events have moved this dream to its present reality. First, mobile and Internet technologies have advanced at break-neck speed. And, children's access to these technologies have become broad and commonplace. The second event is John's introduction to Andrew Hawes in 2009. God's journey for Andrew and his family placed them in the backyard (literally) of the church where John was serving as children's pastor. Andrew's commitment to Kingdom work, his experiences as web developer and designer, as well as his remarkable ability to overcome technology barriers make Andrew a perfect and unique fit for this work. The third event is the handful of generous investors who quickly caught the vision for Impress Kids—enough to take a substantial risk—and, whose motivation is more in the potential impact than in any possible returns.

The Rest of the Story
Our sincere hope for "the rest of the story" is best expressed by Paul's prayer for a start-up church in the seaport city of Thessalonica:

"With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ." (2 Thessalonians 1:12-13)

Statement of Faith

BibleWhat we've presented in this statement of faith is a cursory description of InsideOut Studios' position on points we consider important enough for this context. A full statement of faith will be provided upon request.

When Moses asked God what His name was, God replied, "I AM WHO I AM" (Ex 3:14). God is. We believe God has revealed that in some fantastic and mysterious way He ever exists as One God in three distinct co-eternal and co-equal Persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Father is wonderful, eternal and limitless. He is holy, sovereign, good and He is love. He is all of this and infinitely more. Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Savior of man. Jesus was completely God and perfectly man. He became like us in all respects apart from sin (Heb 4:15). He cannot, did not, and will not do anything that displeases God the Father. The Holy Spirit reveals Himself as Counselor and Spirit of Truth (Jn 16:7, 13). Among the many works of God the Holy Spirit, He resides in the Child of God (Jn 14:16-17) and He illumines the understanding of the Word of God for the child of God (1 Cor 2:14).

God has revealed some of His qualities to man through creation (Rom 1:20), but He has chosen to reveal Himself more explicitly to man through special revelation, the Scriptures.

The Scriptures are God's Word. While using the means of human authors, God actively composed His Word so that what was written in the original manuscripts is exactly what God wanted to be written, "All Scripture is God-breathed . . ." (2 Tim 3:16a). Each word is inspired and each word is equally inspired. The result of what was written in the original manuscripts is exactly what God wanted to be written, without error. The Bible is truth and as truth, it cannot fail.

As His final act of creation, God formed man from the dust, gave him the breath of life and declared man was created in His own image (Gen 1:26-27; 2:7, 18-22). Man's God-given purpose is to seek after God, fellowship with Him, and honor Him with his whole being, and ultimately dwell with God throughout eternity.

The fall of man refers to the time, place, and event where the human race, represented by its federal head, Adam, chose to disbelieve and disobey God (Gen 3:1-7). The fall brought physical deterioration, illness, disease eventually resulting in physical death. More significantly, the fall brought spiritual death, relational and physical alienation from God. This event shifted man's orientation to an intrinsic abhorrence of God and rebellion from Him and His holy ways. The entire human race shares this orientation.

The substitutionary death of Jesus Christ provides that which God's justice demands and thereby becomes the basis for the gift of eternal life to those who believe (Rom 5:1-8). Just as the curse is universal and all human beings are under the same curse, all human beings need salvation. This salvation has been initiated and provided by God as a result of His grace without consideration of human merit. This salvation is sufficiently provided through one Savior (Acts 4:12).

It is God's desire for His children to mature in knowledge, spiritual understanding, learn to be productive workers in His service and live to please and honor Him (Col 1:9-10). This is a life-long process in which God, again by grace, is actively involved (1 Cor 1:8-9).

The church is called "God's household" and "pillar and foundation of truth" (1 Tim 3:15). The church is also called the "body of Christ" (Eph 1:22-23). The church is God's "called out ones" from all nations and peoples who are unique and varied in many ways, but whose commonness is their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior, their purpose, and their hope for the future.

The Bible does describe future events and good indications are given to help arrange these events in sequence; however, we recognize the manner and actual order in which future events unfold is God's sovereign prerogative.

"Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen" (1 Tim 1:17).
